What to Expect When Getting a Dental Bridge

Have you recently lost a tooth? If so, one of our dentists may recommend getting a dental bridge to restore your oral health.

When left untreated, the teeth on either side of the gap may start to drift toward the open space. Over time, they may even loosen and fall out. That’s why it’s important to explore your tooth replacement options as soon as possible.

Here’s what you need to know about getting a dental bridge.

Initial Consultation

First, you’ll need to schedule a consultation with one of our dentists. During the appointment, they’ll help you better understand your treatment options so you can make an informed decision about your oral health.

Keep in mind that our dentists may discuss other options for your smile, such as a dental implant or partial denture. Both of these options will replace the missing tooth and help you smile with confidence. But you should be aware of a few key differences.

For example, both dental implants and dentures don’t require us to alter the adjacent teeth in any way. With a dental bridge, we would have to shape the two teeth on both sides of the gap so the crowns could fit over top.

If your dentist determines that you’d be a good candidate for a bridge, they’ll move onto the next step in the process.

Teeth Preparation

As the name suggests, a dental bridge will “bridge” the gap in your smile. A dental bridge is a prosthetic tooth anchored in place by crowns on adjacent teeth or implants.

To make room for the crowns, we’ll need to file down and shape the adjacent teeth. Then, we’ll take dental impressions and send them to an outside lab. This lab will then use your impressions to create a custom dental bridge for your smile.

While you wait for your bridge, we’ll place temporary crowns on the teeth that we prepared. That way, they’ll be protected until you arrive for your second appointment with us.

Dental Bridge Placement

When you return for your second appointment, your dental bridge will be ready to place. One of our dentists will make sure that your bridge fits comfortably in your mouth and blends in with the rest of your teeth. That way, you’ll be able to enjoy a bridge that looks and feels natural.

Next, one of our dentists will remove the temporary crowns and bond the permanent dental bridge in place. Before you leave our office, one of our dentists will check your bite to make sure you’ll be able to bite down and chew without any discomfort.
